Conformal Coat Masking | 25 July, 2002

I've been tasked with increasing the CCA throughput in our Conformal Coating workcenter.

My first approach will be to look into a more *automated* approach for the masking process. We currently use a manual method of using masking tape prior to conformal coat.

Anyone out there with experience in a "smarter" approach to cc masking. The use of custom fit rubber boots, protective fixtures, etc ?

Process recommendations?

Vendor recommendations?

Consider: * Quitting the coating business all together and using a coating service supplier, like: Thermospray Co 800-952-5838 Mike Moninger; Advanced Coating 800-722-1444; Epsco 108 W. 37th St Boise Idaho 83714 (208)389-2000 * Buying a programmable spray machine from a company like: Nordson. * Looking at http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/codeq/doctree/87391.pdf

* Talking to your coating materials supplier. They usually have technical types that provide a wide range of experience. * Using a water soluble temporary solder mask to cover excluded areas, being careful to select one that doesn�t clog your waste water recycling system. * Using a peelable temporary solder mask to cover excluded areas, being careful to select one that doesn�t leave ionic residue on your board. * Making templates by soldering brass stock tubes and bars into a single piece to cover the excluded areas that you set on the board prior to spraying. * Purchasing �rubber� boots that press over or set on top of the excluded areas.

Dave,

Where can I get the rubber boots you are talking about?

We are going to have to start doing 100% conformal coating of boards for some of our customers in high volume, we currently only do a selective coat.

We currently use a silicon coating, is this an appropriate coating for 100%?

I will give my vendor a call but I would like to be a little informed beforehand.

Regarding the type of conformal coat material you require that is down to the service environment/product life expectancy etc. etc. What does your customer(s) require?

I was in a very similar situation as yours a few years ago. All of the replies here are very good. I'd also consider trying to contact an outfit in Ocala, Florida known as KenPrep Services. The number I have is 904-687-3659. I believe the owner passed away a few years back, but I was talking to what I believe may have been his son, or other company representative. They turned out a nice, custom fit rubber boot. If you consider this, hopefully they are still in the business!
