We have been presented with the task of placing a BGA on top of a PGA. The previous process choice was to apply paste directly on the BGA (which failed functional testing) We are considering applying tacky flux (only) on BGA, since this is our first attempt any suggestions will be appreciated

Converting BGA to PGA. Yes!!! Wouldn't want progess in packaging design to slow us down, would we? [Haaaaa. Just kidding. Probably has something to do with legacy designs; form, fit and function; and all that stuff.]

Tacky flux only, like a rework operation to replace a BGA, sounds good.

What was it about your paste approach that caused it to fail in test?

The XRAY looked okay with minimum voids throughout. Customer reports insufficient contact causing intermitten failures.

Questions are: * So, what is your thinking on this "insufficient contact causing intermitten failures"? * How do you print the paste? * Where do you place your therocouples when measuring reflow temperature? * What kind of solderability protection is on the BGA pads of your BGA-to-PGA converter? How thick were these platings?
