Unconventional way of making a PCB | 21 December, 2002

Hi to all, All of us are familiar with the conventional way of making PCB...I mean...photo tools/expose/develop/etch/plate etc., These involve lots of chemicals and the work place is toxic.

I have a small PCB with just two curves (circuit tracks)and two holes. The track width is varying from 0.15 mm to 3mm. I need to just weld two copper wires (step motor coil ends)

Is there a way to make this PCB by unconventional method? Laser machining/laser etching/CNC routing of the copper and just do plating alone so that you skip the exposure,develop and etching of tracks.

Periodically, we get ahead of ourselves and find that we have fabricated boards that require jumpers and other modications. Alternatives are: * Add 'white wire' jumpers and mod the components as third ops * Print, cure, and seal 'jumpers' of epoxy ink prior to beginning assembly and mod the components as third ops or incorporated as routine assembly.

DaveF already gave you some fine answers.

Yes I have seen CNC routed copper PWBs, and the literature is filled with many unique trace types including laying of fine wires on a board or embedded. You wanting .15mm, and I am guessing, low resistance, probably precludes conductive ink traces. It all depends on your specifications.

Hi Again,

As I was thinking about this, I remembered another unconventional way that I was told about from one of the starters of this technology.

Now I don't think anyone would use this technique anymore, yet here it is:

Press Cutting and Pushing Down the copper, followed by fly cutting.

Basically Metal Working -Punch and Die Technology -Milling Machine Technology

Sorry, even though I have seen a machine in action by a test engineering department years ago, and remember some advertisements since then, and maybe have seen one at a show, I don't remember the names of the companys.

If I had to I could probably find some names, yet who knows if they are still in business, thus I suggest that you look into any guides you can find for Prototypes. Use Prototypes and PCBs or PWBs or printed circuits as a search term.
