Optical comparator capabilities built into chip shooters

Are you sure your custoemr didn't get a little confused with what he saw or was told? When he says optical comparator is he talking about the basic component recognition system? some machines when showing the component (on the CRT) show a template that is derived from dims the programmer inputs. Well I guess your customer is sorta right it is compairing the true device to the dims entered to determine if it is within the dimensional tolerances.

I have also heard of machines that check resistence prior to placement (Mydata I think). But never a machine that is defined as having an optical comparator??

I think you already have the answer.

It isn't the same as the true comparator of yesteryear, yet YES, some of the assembly machines have visualization post placement, compared to a golden board or dimensional images imported into the software.

Real value, versus perceived value of these systems is a different question. I tell you they are jazzy systems.
