What is "Topic", when posting a "New Thread"? | 13 January, 2003

When posting a new thread, the person posting must make entries on two screens.

Screen #1: "New Thread" Screen

Screen #1 REQUIRED entries are: * Topic * Select one from "Create In Forum" entries

Screen #2: "Post Message" Screen

Screen #2 REQUIRED entries are: * Subject * Message

Questions: * What is the relationship between "Topic" on Screen #1 and "Subject" on Screen #2? [It appears that "Subject" is the "subject" of the thread when it comes-up on the Forum. Is "Topic" used on the primary Forum screen, the one with all the threads lined-up?] * What are the advantages and disadvantages to using identical / dissimilar words in "Topic" / "Subject"? * Most importantly, how can we best capitalize on this seeming anomoly to make SMTnet a better place [and by extension provide for peace and brotherhood for all]?

Well really the software supports the ability to have a topic that says one thing and a subject that says another. We actually didn't write this forum software but used a 3rd party product (that we heavily modified). They had this feature in there so we just left it.

I can't really think of a time when I'd post a topic that wasn't the same as the initial subject though

Yeh but, it's really terrible to conjugate and enter a killer topic and then have forgotten it by the time you need to re-enter it as the subject.

Do they do it this way over on the Luke Warm Confusion Forums?
