Please HELP! TO220 Lead Forming | 24 March, 2003

I have a board that has a few TO220 packages with the 5 lead style. The problem I am encountering is forming the the leads. The TO220 package needs a 90 degree bend with pins 2 and 4 staggered. I am "not" doing thousands but would like to find a cost effective hand tool to make this lead form. I realize this is not SMD but in the past this group has proven to be the "BEST" in answering my questions.

Thanks,

Kevin

Excelta has some Pliers that may do this. I know that they have one for a 3-lead offset. You may try this number for more info.

Hi Kevin,

Hepco makes a small unit called a Hepco 3000-2, with the right die set this should be no problem. The unit should retail for around $600.00USD, have a good day.

I am still searching for an off the self option. Erem use to make to tool except they have obsoleted it from their hand tool line. I would rather not by a die set as the qty is very low. Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated as well as it someone has something in house they would like to sell I am in need...

Thanks,

Kevin

You could always make your own manual bender with shim stock etc...

The best off-the-shelf option is: Go back to your customer and have them relay-out the board. This will: * Reduce labor costs. * Improve reliability by lowering the chance of package cracking caused by less than optimal lead forming.

Hi Kevin,

Well I or we, used to do this all the time in PiH or THT days with some small hand forming tools (dies) and also some automated ones.

You already have gotten the phone numbers for a couple of the small electronic assembly hand tools places like EREM. I would check with all of them first as your first source. Then maybe check the Amateur Radio Places and the local ARRL shops in your area.

A good machinist can build something for you that will do the trick as well, or you might like to partner with a local hand assembly job shop.

David,

I am with you on the redesign recommendation except we are building a certified piece of equipment that cannot be easily altered. We have given recommendations for the future manufacturability but as we in manufacturing are all to aware these changes do not happen overnight.

I would like to thank everyone for there input. That's what makes this professional community so strong.
