We just started using the 8mm Agilis feeders and found componets are lost during loading and unloading. Thinking about keeping the feeders resident on about 75 of our high runner reels and stocking as point of use. Has anyone run into a similar situation?

Keeping the reels resident on the Agilis feeders is one of the key points of the feeder design. The critical points are to make changing feeders very quick less than 20 seconds per change out. You should have all your feeders on reels staged for the next changeover. I also do recommend keeping a limited amount of backup inventory "no more than 1 shifts worth" to take care of reel exhausts. Keep the rest of the inventory at a central location. Although we do not actually use Agilis feeders we do specialize in feeder staging and storage process to maximize uptime by simply reducing down time. Hope that helps

Hi pete,

We have being using the 8mm agilis feeder for nearly 12 months now, and contary to what you are finding the great advantage of this Mydata feeder system is that we loose very few components, you need no lead in etc. ( compared to other machines). Can you give more detail on your problem ? Component size etc ?

The problem we have is when unloading the feeder several components may be lost due to the partial peel back of he cover tape. This area I am referencing just passed the point of the knife to the pick area. Also matching the correct feeder size with the component size does not always work as specified by the quick set-up card supplied with the magazine. Sometimes it seems to be dependent on the tape type. What I am trying to do is figure out what feeder sizes I need to place a large order. Do you find one size works best for most of your 8mm parts?

Hi Pete, What you are describing is something that will happen regardless of feeder type or machine type. When taking off a partial reel there is the potiential to lose components. It is minimised by careful handling. Yes I would agree that the Mydata feeder recomendation chart is not great. Our own experience is that we use 4.7 type for 0603, 0805 & 1206 quite successfully. We also use 5.4 type for 1206 quite a lot of the time and for TantA and all larger devices on 8mm tape. The feeder should work if(a) the component is fully exposed in the pick position (if not go up a size) & (b) the edge of the cover tape is still attached the bottom tape.(if not go down a size). The only other issue I have had is that with older reels of components that have been left around for a while that the cover tape will lift triggering the light curtain. To re-solve this you need to 'pull' the tape through to the end og the feeder. In these instances you will lose a lot of components in the set up, but a lot less that conventional feeders. If component count and loss is critical you could allocate a seperate agilis for each part number ( or several for high runners).

Ken,

We're talking pennies. Even though the cost of a reel would be cheaper than trying to account for lost components I have to come close in figuring this attrition amount. Reason being is to try and prevent unplanned shortages. I am in constant battle with procuremnet over this issue as well as the, supply me with parts in tape & reel issue. I'm trying to have them place a saftey stock on these class components.

I can fully understand the inter-departmental problem your dealing with. A couple of simplistic thoughts since your only dealing with pennies. You cannot afford to run out or the parts you are dealing with or you will have thousands of dollars of down-time. Point that out to the other departemt. if they allowed you say 3 % extra, that would probably solve your problem and theirs. The cost of dealing with the problem is way more than the cost of the components.
