Another Lead Free question ? | 9 June, 2003

Hi all,

Now there's another question regarding lead free I want to ask.

Suppose I want to qualify a SMT product for lead free, do I need to use a lead free solder paste or any other normal solder paste will do ?

What are the impact of using a lead free solder paste and a non-lead free solder paste.

Thanks in advance.

Q1: Suppose I want to qualify a SMT product for lead free, do I need to use a lead free solder paste or any other normal solder paste will do ? A1: Today, most solder pastes contain lead [Pb].

Q2: What are the impact of using a lead free solder paste and a non-lead free solder paste. A2: Process control gets more complicated, similar to the issues that folk running both water washable and low residue flux have to resolve.

An additional point, do not limit your attention on no-lead to solder paste, consider also the solderability protection on your boards and components.

Hi Kevin,

I hope this info is timely.

To qualify a component for lead free use you need to use a lead free paste. The various lead free pastes have very different wetting capabilities and temperatures required to cause them to reflow properly. You need to be sure the component can withstand these higher temperatures and that the solder flows and wets properly.
