Mishandled OSP | 15 August, 2003

Hi All,

I work for a contract manufacturing and we are having a new PCB to build. The PCB has OSP coating on it and it has been sitting open in the production floor for about 15 days. I am not sure weather it will affect the soldering process or not. What do i need to do to ensure the solderability is good. Do i need to bake the boards?

Inputs are greatly appreciated

First, what do you mean by "mishandled OSP" boards?

Second, we don't like to bake our OSP boards, because of the potential to degrade the coating. Why do you want to bake these boards?

Third, why not paste-up a board, reflow it, and assess the solderability?

A lot of this depends on the initial quality of the OSP. I have had boards that aren't any good being stored air tight for one day. While believe it or not, I recently used boards that were opened and sat for 1 1/2 years and we built them with no problems. I agree with Dave that the only way you are going to know is by reflowing one and see what happens OR send back to PCB supplier and have them strip and re-apply.

Dave, By Mishandled OSP i meant that it had been touched by bare hands (including pads). Its not like I want to or I donot want to bake these boards. Its just that i want to be sure that the boards will be good to use. And I like your idea to apply paste and reflow one and then strip and reapply. This will give me a good idea of the condition. Thanks a lot Jay
