I would use a $49.99 hot air gun. The only issue is temp control some have it some don't. If they don't you have to be careful of getting PCB/Componret too hot. It should take about 1.5 min. to get it off.

Really? A hot air gun? Sounds difficult to control. But $50.00 sounds good! Is this what your company practices? How do you avoid reflowing 603's surrounding the qfp?

the ones we use have a temp adjust/control. To answer reflowing adjacent components we reflow them during the rework. However if we do not want to reflow we either change the tip on the gun to a more localized area or we apply temporary mask to prevent reflow. Is there a concern with reflow 0603 type chips etc.. a 2nd or third time? I have never paid these much attention in the past.

Jon, one other option. Metcal makes tips for the MX stations that are for removing All sorts of Ic components. They are custom sized for each QFP size. If you have the MX stations this is a great way to go. These tips only heat the leads and parts come off fast. The downside is if you need to re-use the component they are usually a little bent from the tip contact. I believe that their cost ranges from $30-100.
