Cleaning of stencil | 20 April, 2004

Hi Everyone, I am trying to stencil print chipbonder. The problem I am having is with the cleaning of stencil. The apertures are gettting blocked and cleaning with alcohol is not helping. Could anyone suggest a better way of cleaning the stencil. I appreciate your help.

You're correct, alcohol can cure or cause reactions in epoxies.

We had a great deal of trouble cleaning adhesive residue from stencils using an alcohol stencil washer. Same kind of thing, adhesive build-up in aperture corners.

The solution we came up with was to convert our stencil washer to run Zestron ES200, a solvent based cleaner designed to remove uncured adhesives. Using the same wash cycle time as we had used with alcohol, we found all of our build-up problems vanished.

I agree that your best bet, however, is to ask your adhesive manufacturer for recommended cleaning agents.

I apologise for the bad info, I read off the wrong column. We use Zestron SD300 in the stencil washer, we use Zestron ED200 in other hand wash applications. Sorry for the confusion.

What type of chip bonder you use? I use Loctite 3611... part #25410 on my stencil screening and use epoxy cleaner, air hose and that takes care of our issues. If you use alchol it just hardens the epoxy so make sure its cleaned out good before restoring stencil.

Hi Indy,

Loctite has a product called 7360 for cleaning uncured epoxies. We had a similar problem and then found out that the alcohol actually caused the epoxy to start setting making it impossible to clean. We now spray with 7360, wipe off with dry wipe, spray with DI water, repeat then dry with compressed air. This seems to be working well.
