If you had a blank check, what would the ideal/dream SMT line look like?

I would like to get an idea of what are the best equipment models out there. I have not been able to go to APEX and I am not sure what new stuff is out there.

Basic configuration: board de-stacker, screen print, solder paste inspection, pick & place (chip shooter) pick and place (chip mounter), post placement inspection, reflow, inline label, inline depannel.

Thanks, Mike

well, it seems that's a question very similar to previuos ones: - High Mix Low - Volume Line? - High Runner Line? - Will you consider operating costs? - Are you in a small/medium/big company so you can negotiate support, spares, etc - Have you checked close to your area for the most used equipment?

'Cause if you want a line that can do all the previous points, with excellent results, doesn't exists

Ricardo makes some good points. My idea of a dream line is one that flexible to run as a high mix/low vol and low mix/high vol. I personally like Dek printers over MPM. The new printers from Mulara look interesting but they are a new company with a small install base. I have experience with GSI for solder paste inspection. These machines are not 0201 capable and don't pass gauge R&R. The most reliable pick and place equipment I have worked with have been Panasonic. PanaCIM software works great to handle the high mix/low vol and low mix/high vol scenarios. The Universal, Phillips, KME and Siemens equipment I have worked with have not been as reliable as Panasonic. I don't have experience with AOI after placement. GSI claims they can do it, MVT used to have equipment for component inspection. I believe Agilent now has the right to this technology. BTU and Vitronic ovens work great. PMJ/Cencorp makes great inline depanel equipment. Tyco, Simplimatic and Flex Link make conveyor systems. Each has pros and cons and I dont know which manufacture has the best systems.

That my two bits. Mike

The GSI will pass gage R&R if you purchase the optional 2x scan head for the 0201;s.

What do you want to do? Is it because you got a blank cheque that you wanna buy the best SMT Line as a hobby or what? If I have a blank cheque I will no longer work with SMT. I'll buy Mansions, Collect Luxury Cars, see the best places in the world etc....especially if I could encash Trillions of Dollars with that!

Forget SMT my friend...you will just give yourself troubles and anxieties.

That's Just Me....It's too good to be true though!

The GSI may pass gauge after installing the 2x scanner, but the cycle time doubles. Is the cycle time hit worth the accuracy?

I agree with the guy about cars, boats, ect... ok, I like as some have said without a doubt, DEK top of the line.... pick and place, love siemens but software is not user friendly, myself, JUKI all the way, great equipment, great software, that means alot, panasonic and rest, yes they are good too, reflow, sorry guys, conceptronics HVN102.. reliable as the day is long, AOI, orbotek... the rest, to many, need to really do research... solder paste deposition, lots of good ones, concentrate more on mixing and viscosity measurements... Malcolm Industries... Are you doing this as a start up? and where? I am sure if it is somewhere around the islands, we will all come help...

Hey 3Com employee....why don't you recommend the killer lines that 3Com had? It certainly wasn't that KME junk you mentioned.

Come on people....a guy asks for a "Dream Line" recommendation and the best some of you can do is 15 year old...outdated....not even good in its day stuff?

Well....that's a pretty broad question. We actually run 3 fuji lines that are mid 90's vintage. We run them pretty much 24 hours a day 6 days a week. They run, run, run and hardly ever break .The software....eh..could be a little more user friendly. So as far as chipshooters and flex placing, I would with out a doubt say Fuji. They have been proven world wide for years.

Here is how our lines are basically set up: Fuji de-stacker MPM AP25 and or Fuji Screen Printers Kanetic Conveyors CP642 and or CP43's IP2 and or IP3 BTU and or Omniflow ovens

This stuff runs very well even though it is old(er) I like to stay with older proven platforms.

There is a lot of new nice equipment out there, but there are ALWAYS bugs in the newer stuff.

For any application- high-mix, low volume to low-mix high-volume:

J.O.T. Automation board handling

MPM UltraFlex 3000 printer

CyberOptics SE300 3D post print inspector

2x Mydata Synergy II w/ Linear Magazines and Agilis feeders

CyberOptics Flex AOI w/ X-Y-Theta measurement

Electrovert OmniEXCEL 10 oven

Seica Pilot LX flying probe tester w/ AOI

Dream away, you'll need about $2 million for this one.

pete, you forgot the board flipper and the same line duplicated again for two sided boards! and how about an Xray machine after each oven in case the flying probe cannot test all lines?

I was a former SLC 3COM Employee and worked with the equipment you mentioned. I would not recommend the equipment 3COM had in SLC. The new Panasonic CM402 machine looks good. I would recommend the DEK over MPM for screen printing based on the problems I have seen after I left 3COM.

3COM Employee if you worked in SLC drop me line. Mike J

I currently run a double sided SMT line set up as:

Siemens auto-load bd. destacker MPM 3000 Camalot gemini dispensor in-line Cyberoptics post print inspection Siemens S25 Siemens S25 Siemens HF1 Electrovert omniflow oven Simplimatic bd stacker inline AOI Simplimatic bd. flipper MPM 25 Siemens S27 Siemens S27 Siemens F5 Electrovert omiflow oven.

This line is a dream to run!

It surprises me that most of our friends have forgotten to keep updated with the latest equipment available these days! For a dream line with a "blank check" why not consider factors like speed, flexibility, changeovers, ease of operation, ease of programming, maintenance, downtime, floorspace, etc. etc. I would vouch for DEK over the MPMs anyday. For placement I would definitely think of Assembleon's Aseries equipment with flexibility in it's true sense whether it is speed, flexibility.....all the factors mentioned above. Electrovert/Vitronics would be my reflows and for all the board handling you can rely on NUTEK equipment. AOI is something that I would not get into since I don't have much experience on that!
