Is Aqueous Cleaning Recommended for BGA boards? | 1 June, 2004

We have been populating lot of BGA boards and for all these boards we have been using No clean solderpaste. We are under the impression that aqueous cleaning is not recommended for BGA boards as the residue cannot be cleaned properly. However we are facing lot of process issues on these boards and want to try aqueous cleaning paste instead of no clean. We have a conventional aqueous cleaning machine from H20 products. In this machine ionized water is sprayed from top and bottom of the board moving on a conveyor. Please clarify whether this cleaning would be sufficient to clean the residue trapped below the BGA. Please recommend a good process.

Abraham, it kinda depends on your BGA ball size, device height. The probem is that very few machines will manage to get cleanign fluid under a BGA and you certainly will struggle to get it dry. You would need to look at various supponofiers as well. Given the choice I wouldn't want to go to a wash process with BGA's. What's the process issues? give us more details about them and the finish of the board, what paste are you using etc... are you looking at the the aqueous paste to get more activity?

We agree with John. It's possible to clean under 1.27 and 1 mm BGA. These devices have a reasonable stand-off that allows cleaning of water soluable flux residues with modern cleaners.

So, if you have process problems with low-res fluxes, what makes you think you will not have the same issues with water soluable fluxes?

Yes. I agree with the previous comments. If you will switch to Water Soluble Flux you need an Aqeous Cleaner.
