Lead-Free Finish Boards and Components | 7 July, 2004

As converting our boards to lead-free finish (Immersion White Tin) we decided to change de mask color from green to blue. We thought this would be a good idea to spread the idea so we could easily recognize the type of solder application related to this board. We also printed Sb on the board part number as to identifie what kind of lead-free finish. Could that also be a good idea for componentS that are lead-free with some markings of what kind of alloy leads are covered (ex. Sn, SnCu). As I understand, there are no great problems with lead-free alloys as far as compatibility. Only lead finishes and lead-free alloys seem to be a problem.

We have done the same using a Red Mask instead of Green. Its definitely a good idea. It makes it easier to distinguish lead-free from lead assemblies.

However, unless you are totally lead-free or two processes are isolated, it will happen that you may process the "lead-free" on the lead line or vice-versa.
