Hi , Our hardware designer wants to introduce a board with a straddle - mounted SMT connector, AMP part number 84487-1 and FCI 71292-001. This is an 80 pin connector that slips over the edge of the PCB and has 40 SMT pads on either side (at least this is my understanding). Now we are low volume so I don't mind placing the connector by hand , but we certainly don't want to be soldering 80 pins by hand . Any one got a process for this type of connector ?

Thanks in advance

We do this every day, We print the bottom side, then the top, and have a tool that presses the connector on. We then process the board down the line. The only tricky thing is keeping fingers out of paste. Fortunately this is a single sided board. For a double sided board we would probably hand solder the 40 pins on the back/first side processed. You may want to look into solder/flux impregnated connector leads if it is double sided or you do not have two screen printers.

Hi Russ, Thanks for the reply -- It is not a double sided board so I guess I will be doing pretty much the same process as you described. I was wondering about was the tool you mentioned -- Is this just a fixture you got made locally or some specific tool. Also are you using single boards or panels ? Given that you are sliding the connector in rather than placing it down is there any issues with the stencil and aperature sizes etc ?

Thanks in advance

We use a locally made fixture that uses tooling pins and a mating block to place the connector onto/into. We then use a toggle clamp to push the connector onto the board. We had to make no adjustments to stencil for our application.
