I'm looking for an industry standard for naming of surface mounted devices. What does the everyone use?

ex. IPC-SM-1206-06 Is this and acceptable convention?

We're not sure why you want to do this, but here's an interesting paper on part numbering: http://www.designchainassociates.com/index.html?http://www.designchainassociates.com/wp/pn.html

Commenting on your scheme: * Not sure what the 'IPC' does for you. * Why not '1206-xxxx', where 'xxxx' is the thickness of the component, the number of leads, or something like that.
