BGA's, 0402's and HASL Boards

I'm looking for some data to support my argument that HASL boards are not the most ideal boards for manufacturing involving BGA's and 0402's. I'm sure one of you SMT Gurus out there can point me in the right direction! Thank you in advance!

Thanks Dave. That's good info even if it does support the argument FOR HASL. Apparently I stand corrected. >dang< I was hoping to make it to the end of the year without making another mistake. Now I've made three. Grrrrrr. But don't you think the "doming" of the HASL pads on the bottomside of the board could lead to tombstoning of the 0402's? If one pad is domed slightly higher then the other? I know there is the argument that if the HASL PCB is manufactured correctly there should be minimal difference between the pads, but at our facility we do a lot of small batch proto boards and we do see variances in our HASL pads. Time to find a new boardhouse???

Hi Mark,

Look on the bright side, if you want to change from HASL you've got the lead free issue which will allow you to evaluate all other finishes, and find the best one for you.

Dave, have you seen any unleaded HASL finishes & any issues arising?

Cheers,

Rob.
