SMT LED placement with Universal HSP 4791 | 11 January, 2005

Hello, We are assembling a large pcb with 256 Lumex #SSL-LXA228SRC-TR31 SMT LED's on an HSP 4791. The part I'm using for the library is a modification of an existing SMT LED from the standard library. The problem is that the HSP rejects about 30% of the parts and after about 5 pcb's every nozzle is bypassed. I'm thinking the problem is that the LED body is translucent (clear) and the camera doesn't see it every time. Does anybody have any suggestions? Thanks in advance, Clarkk

Clark, Which component type are you using? Deform? also, is this a domed led? and if so, are you using a nozzle with an approriate ID to seal on the body? Not every LED may be able to be placed with a 4791.

Vikt, I'm using the LED type (leaded form). The LED is domed, but the dome is on the bottom. The surface that the nozzle picks up on is flat, and the nozzle does not extend beyond the edge of the body. The problem is in the inspection, which is rejecting 30%-50% of the LED's. I think sometimes it is not picking up the contrast between the body, which is clear, and the background. Is there a way on HSP to reduce the light level (like you can on the GSM) to increase the contast? Thanks, Clark

Clark, As a start....Do you have a qualified tech on site to verify that the camera lighting is within spec? If not it's hard to say where you are starting from. I know that UIC still has trained personel that can help you out on this older gear if you need it. Best of luck..

I don't think the light levels can be adjusted manually. Two options that I know of, back ltg and front ltg. If you have auto teach mode, switch between this two. If the bottom is clear use back ltg on a square mold. Hope it helps.

JB, I've toggled between front and back lighting and the results are about the same. But thanks anyway for the suggestion. Clarkk
