Operating a SMT system | 17 May, 2000

I work for a small assembly company that is starting to branch into SMT. I have been choosen to run the setup since I have the most computer skills and greatest knowledge of componets in the shop. However, I am finding out I need a lot more knowledge than I presently have. I am just now understanding the difference between a 1206 and an 0805 componet. I need help!!! Are there any how-to books, teaching aid, etc.to show me how to do SMT. SMT for dummy's? :} I need to learn it all from the very beginning.

Janet- Sorry you didn't see the train coming before you committed. Start with voracious readings of everything in the archives in this forum. Once you are armed and dangerous there is some very helpful people here that can support you. It would help you if you did the homework first so you can prioritize your direction. Otherwise, do yourself and your company a big favor and outsource to a qualified CM (Contract Manufacturer) to help you with the SMT.

Janet, If you do not have any SMT experianced personel hire a consultant. You can find them everywhere on this site even if they say they don't participate or even agree with SMTNET. Whoever you choose can give you the direction and understanding needed to pick up the ball and play the game. If you want to try it solo there is more than enough reading material in the smtnet bookstore to get you started!

That's just my opinion, I could............!!!

JAX,

I agree with the SMTnet, flattering myself as if you meant me as an example. I just don't agree with where it should/is going.

You and Thorup are shining examples of very technically capable people offering your advice and great knowledge freely - as it should be.

However, I am available as a really cheap consultant having little knowledge of this business, but I'll take what I can get. That's kind'a like this forum's management when discussing advertising while using you all to their advantage.

Also, I participated for so long it was fun until it wasn't. I wouldn't even register protesting too much, maybe, until Clifford offered to sign me up then the articles - those damn articles that no one read. When am I going to quit this stuff or be cut off? I could be wrong but I'm not.

Janet, There's 25-minute IPC VT-91 video on Introduction to Surface Mount Rework (if available in your office) you can start with. To keep you going, you can request the dummy component catalogs from Practical Components and Topline Dummy. 'Think, they'd be glad to send it to you free of charge. Their catalogs are full of info as I regularly order parts from them when I conduct my SMT Training Classes. You may also start reading/(view a video) about ESD control/awareness.. a very important subject about SMT. Then look forward to the applicable IPC Acceptability Standards. 'Hope this will get you moving. If you need some clarification, just post your message reply. Good luck.

MoonMan, Although I did make an obscure criticism about your "on the fence" association with SMTNET it was simply made to catch your attention. I know you have done and, most likely, still want to do consulting work. I figured you would make an ambiguous attempt at landing the position, if it happened to present itself. I guess I was wrong....... On the other hand, you can still add another thread, Even if it is simply to see your name in print.....or not!

Janet: What a great adventure you're starting!!!!

For newbies: * Buy Ray Prasad's "Surface Mount Technology" book. * Attend RP's introductory course at NEPCON (or where ever) it's as good as anyone's. * Subscribe to "SMT" and "Circuits Assembly" Magazines * Avoid talking to sales types * Join SMTA and attend meetings * Search the archives. You not the first babe to wander from the woods and find us. * Don't talk to Earl Moon. * Stay tuned to SMTnet, genuflect periodically, and find other sources to support or contradict.

Earl: Two things: 1 You know that I read your articles, because I asked you questions about them and e-mailed you a drawing of a layer stack. 2 You certainly rose to JAXs bait. I believe he may have set the container on the table, while removing his Spincast from the tackle box.

Bait, my ass. Something so thinly vailed is what I'm talking about on this forum. However, Janet is a prime example of someone needing help and you folks kindly offered with good advice. How could you not give good advice to someone needing everything at the start of a new adventure.

As for me, there's a new adventure everyday either consulting or not. As Dave suggested, don't talk to me as I can be of no help here but would if I could - freely, no charge, nada - as I've always done on this forum and elswhere.

Yes Dave baby, you sent me a drawing. You were the only one apparently intelligent enough to even read my stuff, let alone respond to it. I'll never know if anyone else responded considering the number of hits I received on my "site" because this forum's incrediblly astute management prevents anyone, but them, from knowing what's going on with those hits. But then, of course, you and JAX have it all figured out. Bait my ass!

Janet,

I like Dave's advice. I would send you first to www.smtmag.com They have articles there that give the basics of SMT. Look for the button that says "Step-By-Step SMT." It will give you a touch of what your in for. Then find a good book.

If you don't have any sort of PCB assembly experience, I would also recommend that you try to convince the company to find someone to come in and help. With a small company that may not be possible.

I found the archive of this site helpful in learning some of the basics. Always, always, search there before asking a question. There are many sites of vendors and such that you can learn the advantages of various machines. Then search the archives on this site using the model or vendor's name to see what kind of experience people have had.

Since I am leaving, I am sure this forum will be happy to have another woman on the forum. I hope it goes well for you.

Good Luck, Nancy

Hmmm, I don't think JAX knows Earl very well. He did not need to bait Earl. I don't think he could have resisted that the name was Janet. I am sure he "sensed" that a woman had shown up on the forum :) (Sorry, couldn't resist, Earl)

Nancy,

After all our time together you grew to know me too well. But damn, just when I thought I was out of this thing, you have to pull me back in again.

See you did learn a lot and now you've given something back very valuable, not to me (I mean, you really finished me off this time) but to your possible replacement.

Enjoy Nancy, and I will miss you and most of the others. What others? Damn, I'm bad. How can I be so bad when I used to be so good. See what you've done?
