AOI Systems

In a few weeks I will receive an AOI machine. My concern is to know where is the best location for this machine in the complete assembly line. Here is a description of what I have : Auto loader - Printer - Chipshooter PNP - Multi fonctionnal PNP - Reflow - Manual assembly - Wave - ICT.

Thanks,

Hi Frank,

What are your main issues on inspection? Is it missing or missaligned components, poor solder joints, or long inspection times?

If it's a good system that does everything you could start it after the printer to verify that operation, then move to before reflow to verify Pick & Place & fix any problems there, then finally move to post reflow when everything else is stable.

Good luck,

Rob.

Or leave it stand alone. Granted, you may not be able to inspect 100%, but you can inspect before relow, after relow (if your AOI does solder joint inspection), inspect before wave and afterwards if needed.

Now how did you justify a peice of equipment without having a game plan?

I agree with the stand alone option. That way you can sample PCB's from different stages ( print, placement post reflow)

In a controled process, after reflow inspection would be ideal.

We want to check for missing and misaligned component. The problem we have right now is concerning modifications. When ICT detect a problem ( missing component or a bad resistor value ) we have to remove soler, do the change and resolder. It's too long. So if we detect it before the end of the process it will be easier to do the modif and then continue the process.

If you have an AOI system, where is it located actualy and do you think it's the best location ?

I agree with stand-alone as well. We're a CM and have three AOI's, we keep them all stand-alone.

We use them for paste inspection, first articles off SMT equipment, QC articles from SMT, hand assembly QC, TH first article and TH QC.

We treat AOI as a stand-alone department freeing up time and manpower in the others departments.

Thanks Howard,

I understand that it's excellent everywhere but the only thing with Stand-alone is how do you manage your production path if everything pass thru AOI?

We produce a lot of PCB per year and as soon as a PCB break the standard path, it's a lost of time.

Hi frank,

At first we did see some issue with moving the boards.

We placed the AOIs in as central location as we could. Basic we do first articles and sample QCs from the less critical locations like paste inception and TH. And then run 100% QC on all produced product that way we can check for assembly process issues and verify the correct final assembly of the product. Granted there is some trade off of personal time moving the PCBs but its offset by the potential of a incorrectly setup line and the inspectors having to look for missing or damaged parts.

Thanks a lot Carter for this information.

Why don't you use a dedicated First Article Inspection machine that is specifically designed for this type of inspection. This would reduce downtime and provide your AOI with golden sample and be far more cost effective. Try Cluso Vision Systems.
