Nozzle life?

Pretty new to this...

How long should you expect nozzles to last? I'm noticing that they're continually clogging with solder paste, leading to TONS of bad picks/rejections. How often should I expect to be replacing them, and why are they clogging with paste? BTW - this is on a GSM-1.

Thanks!

We also ahve GSM's and paste on the nozzles is not an issue here. my question would be: Why is paste getting on the nozzle?

The nozzle should only come into contact with the surface of the component being placed, not the paste.

If that is the case, then you are using the wrong size nozzle, it may be overlaping the component. Look at the monitor when running production, you shouldn't be able to see the noozle tip and the component.

So double check your components and make sure the right nozzle is being used.

By the way, what noozle type is geeting past?

Nozzle size is probably the main issue, but it could be a problem with the vacuum level too. Vacuum level should be a minimun of 20 in HG. Also verify that you have 85 PSI going into the machine. A lot of times, the paste in the nozzle is due to the fact that the part passes vision and then falls off the nozzle prior to placing that part. Nozzle still comes down into the paste without a part being present. You may want to try turning on Pre-Orient in the component definitions also.

Nozzle used? Nozzle tip damaged/worn-out (that's where the nozzle life comes in)? Component package? Heavy component? Feeder? Do You see that component type, used by that nozzle inside the machine, or components at the wrong spot on the pcb? If so, then the component could have fallen off after the ULC, as mentioned in previous posting. Possible reasons for that: poor vaacum, wrong nozzle used, poor pick up - and this itself, could bee a number of reasons not to mention vacuum and nozzle again...ach!

To get paste in the nozzle, it must hit the pads on the pcb, and it seems that only small packages or a package with terminals right beneath the pick up area (like BGA's) could match this criteria. Take a close look on the monitor, for the x-y and theta number that comes up after the vision inspection; that will tell you how much off center in microns, the component have been picked up. If You are using lead inspection, turned it off to be able to see the offset numbers. If you don't see the numbers; set vision diagnostics to 4 or 5 (system setup).

If pick position is off more than acceptable, check feeder/consider feeder teach. Also check the filter in the nozzle. Keep us posted...

We're using 10MPF nozzles to pick 0603 components. I think I have noticed, that it does overlap. Is 08MPF the proper nozzle?

These are also the only nozzles that I've had problems with - so this is probably the case.

Thanks for the reply. Like I just posted to the other replier, this is only a problem with 10MPF nozzles picking 0603 components off 8x4mm feeders. Feeders are all taught properly, and pick position is usually off by <100...

I'll check vacuum on Monday, but my guess is that we're using the wrong nozzle altogether?

How/where do I check the vacuum level? Thx!

Im sure the 10MPF is not a correct nozzle to use. I dont have manuals handy so I cant answer as to the correct nozzle. We use a HSP 4792 to place all of our passive parts so I have never given this much thought. But the machine will not try to place parts that are not present when camera verifies angle. The part must be getting lost after optical recognition. That is unless the error tracking is turned off, usually used when running in Dry cycle mode.

First thing is you should be using a 08MPFX nozzle for a 0603 part if you are using a flex head. Then to check the vacuum you should have received a vacuum gage with a nozzle tip that fits on to your spindle and then you turn on the vacuum in diagnostics for the spindle you want to check.

Actually, in thinking about what someone else had posted - I'm willing to bet that it's not that I'm losing parts and the nozzle is actually touching the paste, but more that since the nozzle peeks over the sides of the component slightly, especially if it's not picked spot on, it's sucking some paste up over the sides of the component as it places. Couple that with the fact that sometimes we have pasted boards sit out for a few days before parts are placed (dry paste), and I think this is the problem.

To the other poster - I'll verify that 08MPF is the right nozzle. Thank you.

UIC has a nozzle specifically designed for 0603's. (UIC P/N 46937042) That's what I've been using with better results than the 08mpf. Even the 08 will overhang the part some. We place 0603's on pretty tight centers so I need a nozzle that wouldn't overhang at all.

At $50 vs. $880, I've got the feeling we'll be sticking with the 08MPF's. Thx, tho. ;)

When you place 100's of 0603's and don't want to spend the $$ on re-work. Spending an extra bit of cash on nozzles looks pretty attractive. Besides I'm placing 0603's close enough together that the 08 won't work.

I remember Metro Nozzles mentioning that they are bringing out a new "blade" nozzle soon to allow closer density placement of 0402's & 0603's than the 08MPF allows. Also noticed that you get far better placement with a 1 mil camera than a 4 mil, coz you can actually line the part up better.

(This is with a Flex Head, not a Flex Jet)

Cheers,

Rob.
