Mydata's handling matrix trays ?

Mydata's handling matrix trays ? | 15 April, 2005

We are seeing more and more jobs come in with matrix tray parts for our mydata machines. The problem is that the largest Y wagon will only hold 3 or less trays. We have some jobs that have 10+ trays. Currently our operators cut the trays down to smaller sizes to make them all fit on the Y wagon. My concern is the amount of component handling that takes place and the fact that you need to re-load the trays constantly because they are smaller. I know Mydata has tray wagons and tray exchangers, but both the wagon and exchanger take up 3 slots on the machine which would normally hold tape magazines or vibes.(I cannot loose 3 slots to a device that handles matrix trays)

It was my idea to add a Fuji IP3 with MTU next to the Mydata work cell to handle jobs with multiple trays. It seems that IP3's with MTU are pretty available on the used market for reasonable prices.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this ?

The Tray wagon on a Mydata can be any table width you desire, a one bay holds two trays, a two bay holds five, and a three bay holds seven. The tray wagon can be removed in about a minute flat. the TEX actually only requires two slot positions to hold 32 trays, and can be removed in about 15 minutes..

Just thought I'd clarify

I like Mydata, Fuji, and Panasonic equipment. However if you have one, I"m not a fan of mixing. I have worked with the IP3 with MTU. I found it a good solid machine. The only thing at that time was the programing. I believe they have changed things to make it better. But still you would have to deal with two very different programming jobs. One for Mydata and one for Fuji. Why not get a second MYdata? You have the training for it and the spare parts. Getting a machine from a second manufacturer means more spare parts, more training, and having two different programs to generate. For jobs with lots and lots trays, I would recommend the IP3, but if you have a Mydata I would reccommend staying with Mydata. I kinda miss the whoosh of air with the click click click crash as the IP3 dumped another empty tray.

I agree with Stephen. The mixing of manufacturers can be a large headache if you do not have alot of people and time to get trained on the new manufacturer. The used equipment dealers won't like this, but buying a used fine pitch placer without knowledge of that machine can get you into alot of trouble. You could buy a machine in perfect shape but would still need good training to have an effective machine.

We currently have Fuji's(IP3's included) and Mydata's in our SMT area , so training is not an issue. The reason I was thinking of an IP3 is because they seem to be available for 50K or so. We cannot afford to loose any mag positions on our Mydata's to a tray exchanger or tray wagon.

Stephen, I agree it is pretty cool when the MTU's pitch out empty matrix trays. It's also pretty cool when it picks up a tray full of $1000.00 parts and throws them on the floor ! DOH !

I was going to say something about being carefull to not replace part trays with full trays and to make sure where the pickup location curently is. I think we had a tray of parts drop, then there were restrictions on who could load trays. When I worked on them, they had an interesting bug. Sometimes we were short parts on a run and were going to finish the run without them. Sometimes the part empty exhaust would not be cleared before the program was edited and downloaded. What would happen then is the machine would not run untill the part exhaust was cleared, but would not clear the part exhaust because the part was not in the program. Once I told the tech working on it, to put the part back in the program dl it and then clear the part exhaust. He acted like I was stupid for not understanding that we were out of parts. I'm glad I now have a boss who is picky on who he hires.
