Hi all,

Does anybody have any comments/experience with a laser selective solder machine? What about Beamworks Spark 100 machine?

I appreciate your feedback.

A thorough analysis is in order because laser point-to-point soldering lacks the flexibility of the bottom sided miniwave systems. My experience showed that heating profiles could be grossly affected by color temperature and thermal mass. This can be a bigger problem if you are a contract manufacturer and never know what to expect in the way of new setups. Another alterntive to laser is a point-to-point soldering system that uses the integrated microflame soldering system like the ones from Spirig International.

There are several types of lasers to do laser soldering. Panasonic also has a high intensity light that can solder as well. I've tried em' all and two over whelming things stand out when it comes to this type of soldering. #1 is preheat. It seems most manufacturers have over looked preheat. Without preheat parts can be damaged. Plus, preheat aids a lot in the overall soldering process. #2 is alignment. Making a laser hit a board in the exact same spot is a challenge. Lasers can burn the resist off a board in a millisecond and cut a trace before you know it. That ozone smell is something you tire of very quickly.

Low end selective laser soldering systems are limited to what types of soldering can be performed. I have read through the previous comments and find that most have commented on earlier technologies (which do not offer the features today's system do). To address a few points, here are features you want and the reasons why: 1) Variable Beam Size - this allows you to target the pad to the exact size, pin to pin (through software). Ranges are generally from .9 to 2.5 mm (on the fly) 2) Dynamic compensation - with fiducial recognition and dynamic compensation pads can be located and soldered every time with a very high degree of accuracy. This feature is highly recommended. 3) Auto solder feeder with Geyan feed system - this system perforates the solder wire as it is being fed to allow the fumes to escape freely during the melting process. Otherwise splatting can occur. 4) Independant X, Y Z and Theta movement between soldering head and solder feeder. This allows you total flexibility when soldering components that may have obstructions in the soldering path.

Preheat is a value point but only for those products that have thermally challenged planes. Most laser soldering systems allow you to select a lower initial power setting (preheat) before going to full power for soldering.

A few other notes: Start up is $35 (a spool of wire) vs $20-30K for a bath of solder. Maintenance is once every 4 hours and generally takes 5-6 minutes. Laser self calibrate (at least most do) and are air cooled so no nitrogen is required.

Hope this helps.

The beamworks new software on teh 100 is great but went to outstanding when the 60 watt leser was installed and the performance went up 60% in speed. The new software requires the temp of the solder for melting and the ammount to be despenced and the rest is history. They have a Demo unit in Beverton Orgon
