Machine data for SPC?

It looks like there's another one or two threads somewhat similar, but allow me to pose another. We've only about two years experience in SMD production, and we're just starting to really ramp-up. As we stand right now, I'm not recieving information back from our technicians about assembly errors until about a month after production. This is partly a problem with our process, but as we're growing, I'd like to start looking at data collection and analyis software before we become too entrenched in our ways.

My question is two-fold, I guess. I've got two pick&place, a printer, and an AOI that I'd like to collect data off of - things along the lines of uptime/downtime, product times, rejections, etc. How are you generally interfacing with the machines to do this? I looked around in my documentation, but couldn't find much. All machines have ethernet, but I wonder whether it's something lower-level?

Second, what software packages are people using, or familiar with for this application? I've talked to both AIS, and really liked their product, but the price was prohibitive. I'm not looking to spend as much as I'd pay for a new pick/place for a software package - the argument could be made that it's equally important - but it's not going to happen.

Thanks in advance for your responses. -john.

I believe Aegis Industrial Software has a product to collect this data. Since all machines can be networked. Try contacting them at http://www.aiscorp.com Another is Technomatix, http://www.technomatix.com

By AIS, I meant Aegis. Their software looks fantastic, but it's WAY out of our ballpark, pricewise.

Depending on your machine platform we have something that might help you out. Send me a private e-mail for more details. Thanks...

You should be able to export this data from each machine into an ascii format. Import into Excel and do what you want with it. I don't see that you should have to pay for any software at all. If you are not familiar with Excel and macros etc then get a Visual Basic boffin to write the routines for you. Ask around your company, particularly in the I.T. realm. Show them the source data, (exported from the machine), and then show them what information you want out of it and how you want that information to look. Use the money you were going to spend on software on educating yourself about Excel and what it can do. You'll never have to buy another piece of software. Maybe.

Yeah - I can handle most scripting/programming - but I'm completely unfamiliar with this side of these machines. For example, when looking at the Aegis software, they're tracking real-time defects, etc....That's what I'm curious about there - how to get that real-time data (parts used/rejected on p&p, rejects from AOI, fid confidence from printer, etc). I could certainly do cron'ed exports and mash the data offline into something useable...but not in real-time.

The other issue is that I only have a few years experience on these machines, and know that there's still tons of stuff that's outside of my knowledge. By looking at a software package, it's a matter of figuring out what the routines/options/etc do, as opposed to what they ARE in the first place. ;)

Not at all what I'm looking for - and there's no Fuji in our shop.

Hi John,

What type of machines are you using? (for all you vendor-bashing badmouths out there: this is not an invitation to start advertising you personal favourites!)

There may be people out there that have done this trick before on exactly the same equipment and may want to help you out by sharing their experiences. As stated above somewhere, almost any machine keeps track of the stuff you're after in a proprietary format and in a 'secret' location. Sounds like you just need to know what, where and when.

Regards, Base

Can you not track placement accuracy/feeder performance/print performance just via the AOI in near real time? Once you get a feel for it you can usually tell where the fails stem from, and at most you are only usually around 10 minutes out depending on line speed.

Then when you get more time extrapolate the machine data to see how many parts they are rejecting you can tie it in with your feeder maintenance & nozzle changing programme.

2xGSM-1, MPM UP1500, MVP AOI. I'm really most concerned with the GSM's, though. :/
