and unfortunately I think lead-free is pertinent.

Is "Implementing Lead-Free Electronics (Hwang) as good as any to start with? I'm looking for comprehensive coverage as well as "how to" recommendations/suggestions, etc.

I think you'll find that the Encyclopedia Britanica is a indispensible addition to any library.

OK, then, what's a good book to get that best covers lead free soldering? Is the one I mentioned a good choice?

(still trying to figure out why that's such a difficult question)

Steve,

Let me try to give you a short answer to your question. A good book in soft soldering would talk about the excellent characteristics of leaded alloys and all the reasons why leaded alloys are very reliable. In short a good book would advice you not to use high tin content alloys for many reasons. Can't help naming a few: creep, tin whisker formation, brittleness, tin pest, galvanic corrosion, tin migration etc.

I assume you mean Dr. Jenny Hwang--I attended her lead free seminar and found that most of her info is a good place to start. One of the debates about her work is whether bismuth should be used in any formulation. Many of the paste manufacturers dispute the need to add it.

Thanks, Bob. I was beginning to think that this site no longer had room for a serious discussion or recommendation. I will take your comments into consideration.

Steve, I have her book. Its a good book discussing the entire process. If you are looking for a book strictly discussing solders, then it would be too broad.
