Does anyone have experience using a shuttle on a GSM platform? I'm just wondering how well it works and how reliable and trouble free the component picks are. I am looking to run a low volume line with a printer/oven and a GSM1 platform with a PTF and shuttle. This single machine will be used for all placements as it will be the only P&P machine on the line. I might consider installing a flexjet head as well. Any opinions on this combination would be greatly appreciated. Thanks -

Make sure you have the 1 mil & 4 mil cameras so you can cover virtually any component.

Installation/set up of the component shuttle is critical. The shuttle must be perfectly squared and leveled, since it has a 4 spindle pick/place head on it. This shuttle head can pick up to 4 comps. from the shuttle feeders (gang pick) and will deliver those comps. onto a "sled" that moves into the GSM base machine, where the GSM will pick them from. Concider have an engineer from UIC doing the installation or at least somebody who knows what he is doing. If it is correctly installed and calibrated, it should run just fine, but I haven't had any experiences with chips smaller than 0805 from the shuttle and it's about 6 years since we had shuttles.

2.6 mil/pixel and a 4 mil/pixel cameras works maybe even better. It is sometimes a little bit difficult for the 1 mil/pixel cameras to accept parts; and it will take longer time to inspect a bigger QFP as it needs to take more pictures. We use 2.6 mil/pixel ring light and a 4 mil/pixel front/back light cameras on our GSM:s and this works well all on variety of the component flora that we uses.

Hi,

We used the 1 mil for 0402's etc. Admittedly most of our experience was on 2.6 & 4 mil as we mainly used the GSM's for oddform & fine pitch, but we found that the smaller chips went down better & more accurately with the smaller camera.

Oh yeah, almost forgot...another essential piece of kit is a deck chair - it's going to take a very long time to build a big panel.

The only issues I have had in the past with the shuttle are 1. The transport conveyor into the machine was not aligned correctly causing pickup issue from the belt. 2. Operators not correctly loading parts in trays or updating the qty's, this meant the machine would try and pick from an empty pocket and picked the component from the tray below knocking components all over the trays. 3. Probably a knock on from the above, the mechanism for taking trays in and out would sometimes get jammed with the odd IC.

In general when it's setup correctly (by UIC) and running it didn't give much bother, other than the normal GSM software freezing.

The 7 spindle Flex jet head, can only pick max 7 comps. from the GSM base machine in a single operation, not from the shuttle. The Flex jet head is faster in z-axis and will also use the OTHC (On The Head Camera) to inspect most of Your smaller comps., so it will pick/place the comps. much faster than a regular Flex head. However; this is a fairly expensive head and the maintenance of the Flex jet head is also more time consuming. You need to have pin mirrors, sensors etc. in this head properly cleaned and calibrated. If You are going to populate a lot of mixed size components/week, it is a good choice to have 1 Flex jet head and for flexibility, another C4 Flex head on the other side (C4 Flex head has max placement pressure of 2500gr. standard Flex head max 450gr.) You might need more than 450 gr. pressure for some type of components/connectors.

Thanks all for the opinions. Our shuttle/GSM1/PTF install was done by an ex-UIC engineer. Have never utilized shuttle so appreciate the advice on pros and cons of it all. We have 1.0 mil on PTF side and 4.0 on shuttle side. C4 head on both sides of beam so might just need flex/flexjet on shuttle side. We do have a couple deck chairs and could even pick up an ESD lawn lounger or two. Not real worried about speed as we already have an HSP/GSM2 combo on another line. This would be for specialty/low volume stuff.

Please explain Your line configuration needs or the volume by: components/panel/day/operators(people)/investments/yield/customer requirements/Your own req./etc. that You need. In Your initial thread You said that You had a low volyme production and wantet to " I am looking to run a low volume line with a printer/oven and a GSM1 platform with a PTF and shuttle. This single machine will be used for all placements as it will be the only P&P machine on the line." Did I miss something here? This forum is a very good place to talk about "dings" but if we spend a lot of our time to solve the wrong issues; hmmm...

I'm simply wanting input on how well a shuttle and a flexjet work as I have used neither. I want opinions before looking at $ and other things. (I believe this is SMT related?). If you feal this requires no discussion on this forum then do not spend time replying.
