We have a board that has been diagnosed with inner layer separation from the barrel wall. This board is .093 thick and 12 layers. Several layers, in some cases, have little or no thermal relief making soldering difficult. We have since switched to PIP for the parts in question and that has taken care of the soldering problem but the early units were hand soldered.

We have cross-section photos of the separation so there's no debating the symptom. The customer is convinced that this is a raw fab issue but I wonder if we may have overheated these early units (using irons) and this is an MFG process problem.

Input appreciated.

We're with your customer. We believe inner layer separation is not linked to a heating excursion. What you are seeing is separation between the hole wall and the copper plating in the barrel of the hole on an unstressed PTH.

Although, it's possible that the stresses from the thermal excursions of hand soldering could degrade the interconnection quickly.

We'd expect heavy handed use of soldering irons to lift pads or crack inner walls, rather than cause inner layer separation.

I agree with Davef.

If no evidence of gouging or pad damage exists thn I would suspect supplier issue.

An easy test would be to load the hole with part and thermocouple and find out what your irons are capable of delivering. Unless you're soldering with 200watt plumbers irons I doubt you could get enough heat into the board to cause internal damage without any evidence of surface damage.

Might be resin smear. Check out all the stuff on my free site as articles, photos of almost every board defect imagineable plus much more.

Did I mention, It's ALL FREE ALL THE TIME?

No, come to think of it I don't think you did.

Well, at least if you discount the last 5000 times.

Sorry, I'm exaggerating only 4952 times. ;0)

Now here's a real intelligent guy who obviously needs no help no matter if it's free or not. Must be one darn good engineer, or not.

I'm impressed.

Earl Moon and I'm free too.

That is funny if you have a cable guys view of the world - and just what is that? I'm always trying to see things from a new perspective. Don't worry if you can't read because my site has so many simple pictures for you.

No advertising! Yes sirs! I have placed my hat, head, body, and soul into what Dave and Jax have finally said, plus the fact this forum is totally turned commercial and we pundants have to obey the no advertising rule while the forum management seeks advertising type crap from those willing to post papers or presentations.............

And another thing... Moonman's idea to market a "Jump to Conclusions" mat, is just horrible... what a horrible idea...

Well folks,

You've made it clear what you don't want, so no more free stuff. There will be no more advertising and no easy to read pics, instead of words, and no more door mats. I really liked that door mat idea too.

Damn tough crowd - you cable guy types.

Y'all enjoy now, ya hear?

MoonMan - on the moon where stuff always is free.

Boogie!

You sure have that right at least on this site. However, 35,000 other folks who really know me have other ideas.

You folks have taught me the err of my ways. I told you, no more. After all, it's stupid to give stuff away to anyone. It's insane offering it to people who haven't a clue how valuable it is or what to do with it.

There will be no more visits by me to this site so bye now and happy holidays.
