Tools / Methods to remove solder balls | 16 March, 2000

I am looking for suggestions on " How to remove solder Balls". We have some designs and tools where nothing can be done economically except to remove the solder balls manually. We are using "Probe" picks to do that job. Anyone who can suggest a better tool or method to remove solder balls ? The flux used is low residue NC flux.

Are we talking midship SMT or wave soldering?

SMT - I have found the best method is not having them (WOW) this can be accomplished through pad design, aperture design, placement accuracy, and profiling, It is my understanding however, that these are acceptable per IPC (fully encapsulated in flux....)

Wave - You may want to try a VOC free water based flux and a matte finish solder mask. These will only help if the wave profile is dialed in and all of the "liquids" are driven off prior to the assembly making contact with the wave.

I do not know of any proven method of removal except for brushing and picks either. I hope someone out there does since I would be very interested
