To lubricate feeders or not to lubricate feeders? | 5 February, 2006

We recently purchased an old Fuji IP-I placement machine and have been testing 8x4 feeders for 0805 parts, etc.

I have opened some of the non-working feeders to replace broken pieces and have noticed that some of the feeders are completely clean inside with no lubricants. Some feeders are lubricated with a light oil and operate smoothly. A few of the feeders operate sluggishly with significant resistance and when opened have what appears to be dried up oil with a brown sticky residue.

Is it normal to lubricate feeders with oil or should they be clean inside? If lubrication is required why not use a small ammount of graphite lubricant to prevent paper dust from the paper tape from mixing with the oil and causing sludge buildup?

Any suggestions from someone familiar with adjusting/cleaning feeders?

Regards,

Bert

I take it you are talking about the older style IP feeders.

If so, here is what you need to do.....

Get yourself some mineral spirits,a tub you can submerse the parts in, and a couple nice paint brushes.

1.Dismantle the feeder and wash all of the parts of in the mineral spirits using a paint brush. 2. Blow all of the parts off with an air hose or dry them with lint free rags. 3. Take and additional paint brush and spray some light machine oil on it. Use this brush to put a nice thin coat of oil on your internal parts you have just cleaned. We use Biral T&D. It is expensive, but it works well. WD40 would probably work too.

I saw WD-40 recomended as a lubricant for feeders. I might use it for a quick solvent rinse that I was planning to blow off all traces. Many years ago I put away some micrometers that had been sprayed with WD-40 after a year or so the solvents in the oil evaporated, what was left had the consistancy of chewing gum or worse, almost did not get the micometers apart to clean them and replace the oil. The WD in WD-40 stands for water displacing and for this it is excellant. The moving parts in the feeder would probably respond better to a real lubricant if one is neccesary.
