I know this is not SMT related but would anyone care to comment on Alpha 856 flux, good/bad experiences or any known issues? I did some samples recently using it and had excellent results. Information on it seems a little hard to find and it makes me a little suspicious. Even the datasheet is missing allot of usual backup material.

Thanks, Bill

I use Alpha 857 W.S. for wave is that what you mean? If so, I love this stuff, it solders everything. one downside to it is convection (wave , rework) can dry it out and leave white hazes and even residues at the joints.

Hi Russ, Thanks for the reply. No this is 856, I sprayed some on boards just to try it out and noticed it dries very quickly also but if its soldered right away as would be the case in the machine, it's fine. I believe I tried some 857 and found the same residue issues you mentioned. This stuff looks pretty similar, has a ph of 6.6 vs 2.8 for the 857 but solid content is pretty close.

I've been fighting a white haze in some of these LPI masks that are slightly rough in appearance for a long time, this 856 seems to perform very well on some limited samples. The Kester 2331-ZX we've been using produces beautiful joints but it's really super high on solid contents and also might be reacting with some of these masks.

I have been using Alpha 856 for about 8 years. It is an excellent flux. Today we are using it in a new flow solder machine that has a spray fluxer and it seems to be working fine. I can be contacted at jlalicker@amitulsa.com
