Farewell to fellow old-timers and up-and-comers alike | 17 February, 2000

It is with some regret that I find that feel that I can no longer contribute to this forum with the same zeal I once had. The forum old timers will remember when I was a leading respondent to technical questions.

Many issues drive me to this decision. Suffice it to say that I no longer care for the direction of this forum. I have tried to help out behind the scenes over the years, as well. But the time has come for me to move on; beyond this forum.

I have enjoyed the banter. I have enjoyed the forum. To the younger engineers; stay with it. Sharing of information and "lessons learned" is valuable.

Goodbye to all. I have enjoyed discussing the technical issues of our industry with all of you.

Although I hate to see anyone leave I cannot help but feel that the forum will benifit from it. Once you no longer look at the forum as simply a medium to carry out your technical discussions and start thinking of it as a way to benifit yourself, the underlying purpose of it's existance is void. SMTNET, just like every business today, must make a profit to stay alive. How they do it is of no concern. The reason any of us joined the forum to begin with should be the same reason why we stay. For some it is simply question and answer, for others it is a way to take pride in what we do and to help others do the same. Scott, I will be sorry to see you leave and I wish you the best wherever you go. If you ever come full circle on why you joined to begin with we will always like to hear from you again. " That's just my opinion, I could be wrong! "

We always regret to see a dedicated user leave the fold. Over the past few months we have made many changes to the site, and we believe, improved the quality of the forum experience for our users.

During our recent site upgrade we responded to user suggestions that we make all forum strings viewable on a single page. By doing this we risked sacrificing a significant number of �page views� which are the lifeblood of the banner-advertising medium. Users have responded to the change by increasing participation in the forum, once again proving the axiom of �if you build it they will come�.

SMTnet users provide the direction of the forum, and more generally, the SMTnet site. Not only do we encourage input, I think we have proven time and again that we act on those suggestions. We have a small dedicated staff, and unfortunately lack the resources to reach out to users as proactively as we might like.

SMTnet is an ever-improving resource for the community of electronics manufacturing professionals, and we consider you an upstanding member of that community. We hope that as your time and interest allow, you will continue to make SMTnet a part of your online business experience.

I'd have to agree with JAX here. This forum is intended to be a "Technical Bulletin / Newsgroup" and nothing else. Truthfully, these posts of the "old-timers" announcing their departures is getting..well.....OLD.

I hate to see the Old-timers leave because their advice has been very helpful to me ever since '97 when I first started reading this forum. The younger guys like me end up losing out because we no longer have the benefit of the Old-timers' experience and expertise.

I'm hoping that some of you have a change of heart and come back....It's not like the "Managers" of this forum are the managers or higher-ups for the companies that you work for in the real world....all of these departures and farewells remind me of disgruntled employees leaving a company because of the politics...sure, the forum's been slow, the administrators unresponsive at times, and some changes weren't so good...but, who cares?? This is JUST a forum for Electronics Manufacturing professionals seeking advice from each other...nothing else. Participating or NOT participating in this forum isn't going to affect your real careers..i certainly wouldn't think so, anyway.

Anyway, for all of the old-timers who left, I hope you re-consider and come back...personally, C.K. is here to stay, and maybe 10 years from now, I'll be considered an old-timer, and I'll be able to give good advice to young ones.

Sorry to see you leave SMTnet. I want to thank you again for being the most frequent contributor in the early days of the Forum, and for your continued partipation and help as editor of the SMT Express. Since archived messages only go back to late 1997, the SMTneter's Corner only lists a small portion of your contributions. It takes a huge amount of time and commitment to participate at the level you, Earl, Dave and others have done, and at times it may have seemed that the management at SMTnet did not care your contribution and input. It certainly was not the case when I was manager here, and I know Keith has been trying to put even more focus on user feedback. I hope you will see things change for the better in the future and continue your participation at a level that your time allows. Even though more participants are becoming "old-timers", it is hard to replace a true old-timer like you.

Wish we could all quite showing our age and just enjoy the SMTNet. Most of us enjoy reading the responses and at times responding to issues that are important to all of us. Technical information is so important to all of us.

Most of the Olde contributors have moved on to other places, issues, or things that keep us too busy to be involved on a daily basis, but we have been reviewing many of the posting, just not responding.
