There are many challenges facing the assembly industry today such as: - Lead-free assembly and other environmental concerns - Continued shrinkage of active and discrete components - New alternate fab finishes such as immersion tin and silver - The push for higher quality and throughput while reducing in-house technical resources

What do you feel is the most critical issue facing our industry as a whole, from a technical standpoint?

Better design for manufacture Better education for engineers in manufacture at college and university Realising that there is just so far you can push FR4 laminate Finding a way of making all the knowledge in our industry available to those future engineers

Hi Bob,

I am a member of the IPC Designer's Council and as the Education officer for our San Diego Chapter, I would like to see more information available to help educate the existing Designers and the students in design classes we are trying to get going in the Junior College systems. What resources would you reccomend to help us gather information to present to them? And as a second question... what other materials would you suggest besides FR4? I am trying to make the knowledge I have available on-line by developing a website to help designers have access to the knowlege they need. - Bill Brooks

There are so many people with this knowlege I would suggest some form of evening class. We did use to do it over here but it did not have many takers.

I lecture every year at two universities and schools its great fun and don't you people ask the most difficult questions.

As a plug there are my two training videos and CDs on Design for Manufacture ? And what about all that good material from the IPC ? I would love to spend more time in Universities and schools but the bills have to be paid as well.
