The continued trend towards smaller form factors – common in smartphone PCB assembly applications – has led to smaller components and smaller PCBs that are densely populated. This trend presents manufacturing challenges, but it also provides a UPH improvement opportunity.  A larger number of smaller PCBs can be loaded into a dispensing platform at one time. This not only increases UPH, but also the number of fiducials – high-speed fiducial capture can find those fiducials fast and further improve your UPH.

Capture Fiducials Continuously

Fids-on-the-Fly™ high-speed fiducial capture software is up to 5.5X faster than the traditional stop-and-capture method for locating fiducials and can increase UPH as much as 35 percent.

Enabled through Fluidmove^® software, Fids-on-the-Fly is ideal for high-volume, high-density dispensing applications including PCBs; wafer-level, narrow-pitch grid arrays; and strip substrates. With Fids-on-the-Fly software, the camera moves continuously, capturing images on the fly – the more fiducials required, the greater the time savings. Fids-on-the-Fly software is designed for applications with more than 10 fiducials.

How it Works

Fluidmove software calculates a spline travel path based on the programmed fiducial locations in the dispense program. Once the path for all fiducials is calculated, image-capture is performed at maximum acceleration and velocity without stopping. Fids-on-the-Fly software uses a high-speed digital camera that operates at 60 frames per second. High-intensity on-axis LED lighting enables reliable fiducial capture for even the most difficult applications. The semiconductor application example below shows how Fids-on-the-Fly can improve overall takt time.

 

 

Fids-on-the-Fly software is available as an option on the Spectrum^® II and Quantum^®fluid dispensing systems. Additional hardware is required for older systems.

Get Started with Fids-on-the-Fly
For newer systems that include the Fids-on-the-Fly option, do the following:

    1. From the Fluidmove programming window, select Edit > Edit Program Options > Setup Vision Options.

         The Vision Options dialog box is displayed.

    2. In the Fiducial Finding area, select Enable Fids-On-the-Fly.

3. Click OK.
