Gas Engine Basics

The image below shows the basics of a stationary gas engine and generator used for the production of power. It consists of four main components – the engine which is fueled by different gases. Once the gas is burnt in the cylinders of the engine, the force turns a crank shaft within the engine. The crank shaft turns an alternator which results in the generation of electricity. Heat from the combustion process is released from the cylinders  This must be either recovered and used in a combined heat and power configuration or dissipated via dump radiators located close to the engine. Finally and importantly there are advanced control systems to facilitate robust performance of the generator.

GE Jenbacher gas engines can be configured to produce:

Electricity only (base-load generation)

Electricity & heat (cogeneration / combined heat & power – CHP)

Electricity, heat and cooling water (trigeneration / combined heat, power & cooling – CCHP)

Electricity, heat, cooling and high-grade carbon dioxide (quadgeneration)

Gas engines are typically applied as stationary continuous generation units but can also operate as peaking plants & in greenhouses to meet fluctuations in local electricity demand. They can produce electricity in parallel with the local electricity grid, in island mode operation, or for power generation in remote areas.

TRIPS: A 469 trip feature may be assigned to any combination of the two Auxiliary relays, 2 AUXILIARY and 3 AUXILIARY, in addition to the 1 TRIP Relay. If a Trip becomes active, the appropriate LED (indicator) on the 469 faceplate will illuminate to show which of the output relays has operated. In addition to the Trip relay(s), a trip will always operate the Block Start relay. Trip features are may be programmed as latched or unlatched. Once a relay has been operated by a latched trip, a reset must be performed to clear the trip when the condition is no longer present. If there is a lockout time, the Block Start relay will not reset until the lockout time has expired. If an unlatched trip feature becomes active, that trip will reset itself (and associated output relays) as soon as the condition that caused the trip ceases. Immediately prior to issuing a trip, the 469 takes a snapshot of motor parameters and stores them as pretrip values which will allow for troubleshooting after the trip occurs. The cause of last trip message is updated with the current trip and the 469 display defaults to that message. All trip features are automatically logged and date and time stamped as they occur. In addition, all trips are counted and logged as statistics such that any long term trends may be identified.
