I have been asked to get a 4712B onserter running again and have a few questions; Does this make sense in terms of reliability and maintainability? Is the 4712B desigened as a standalone only machine? Also, I need documentation and software if anyone has same and is willing to sell it.

No, it makes no sense at all. This is a very old and long obsoleted machine and a very poor design to boot. I know first hand because I worked on them many moons ago. The Onserter was designed as a "pass-thru" machine. Software and manuals will be hard to find. My advise is to scrap out the machine.
