The recent IPC Midwest Conference & Exhibition in Schaumburg, IL was a small but important showcase of companies in the SMT/PCB Industry. The exhibition was coupled with many technical conferences and special events. On the show floor, highlights included a working assembly line that included:
The event, held September 23 & 24 at the Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel & Convention Center near Chicago, offered a myriad of opportunities for learning and business development. Many show announcements were made:
Keeping relationships strong The trade show floor again provided a good place for suppliers to meet with vendors and consumers. Company after company we met with echoed the fact that they had many meetings set up with existing customers and potential leads. So, while the traffic at the show was not heavy, quality meetings connecting existing relationships were abundant everywhere. Marketing on the Internet - A new industry understanding? SMTnet spoke with many companies at this years show about their internet marketing efforts and found that a new understanding may finally be starting to happen in our industry. As a whole, the SMT industry lags behind many other industries in terms of investment in web opportunities. However, our meetings at the IPC Midwest show this year indicate companies are at least beginning to understand the importance of being visible on the web and in the major search engines like Google, Yahoo & MSN. Steve Pollock, Vice President from Essemtec explained, "I used to get many quality leads every month when our website was on the first two pages of Google, Yahoo & MSN for many terms. Now, our search engine visibility has decreased and the amount of leads deriving from the internet have decreased significantly." On a positive note, Mike Konrad from Aqueous Technologies noted that his advertising on SMTnet.com drives almost double the leads he gets from any other industry site. In addition, Mike also told SMTnet that his experiment with selling online seems to be working quite well with a piece of equipment selling recently through his ecommerce system for $10,000. "Selling the equipment online is an experiment I'm doing right now -I'm selling some equipment significantly cheaper online since it allows my company to save on the sales & billing cycles necessary for a normal sale." |
