Positive Outlook from Exhibitors at IPC Midwest 2009

Positive Outlook from Exhibitors at IPC Midwest 2009

The recent IPC Midwest Conference & Exhibition in Schaumburg, IL was a small but important showcase of companies in the SMT/PCB Industry. The exhibition was coupled with many technical conferences and special events. On the show floor, highlights included a working assembly line that included:

  • Ace Production Technologies
  • ASYS Automation
  • Aqueous Technologies
  • Bare Board Group
  • Capital Equipment Exchange Company
  • Freedom CAD Services, Inc.
  • Fuji America Corporation
  • Kyzen Corporation
  • MicroScreen LLC
  • The Morey Corporation
  • PROMATION Inc.
  • Qualitek International, Inc.

The event, held September 23 & 24 at the Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel & Convention Center near Chicago, offered a myriad of opportunities for learning and business development.

Many show announcements were made:

Keeping relationships strong

The trade show floor again provided a good place for suppliers to meet with vendors and consumers. Company after company we met with echoed the fact that they had many meetings set up with existing customers and potential leads. So, while the traffic at the show was not heavy, quality meetings connecting existing relationships were abundant everywhere.

Marketing on the Internet - A new industry understanding?

SMTnet spoke with many companies at this years show about their internet marketing efforts and found that a new understanding may finally be starting to happen in our industry. As a whole, the SMT industry lags behind many other industries in terms of investment in web opportunities. However, our meetings at the IPC Midwest show this year indicate companies are at least beginning to understand the importance of being visible on the web and in the major search engines like Google, Yahoo & MSN. Steve Pollock, Vice President from Essemtec explained, "I used to get many quality leads every month when our website was on the first two pages of Google, Yahoo & MSN for many terms. Now, our search engine visibility has decreased and the amount of leads deriving from the internet have decreased significantly."

On a positive note, Mike Konrad from Aqueous Technologies noted that his advertising on SMTnet.com drives almost double the leads he gets from any other industry site. In addition, Mike also told SMTnet that his experiment with selling online seems to be working quite well with a piece of equipment selling recently through his ecommerce system for $10,000. "Selling the equipment online is an experiment I'm doing right now -I'm selling some equipment significantly cheaper online since it allows my company to save on the sales & billing cycles necessary for a normal sale."

Industry Leaders' Comments

Jacob H. Paster, Vice President

RMD Instruments

This is a 'very important time' referring to the subject of counterfeit parts. Though this subject is often hush hush these days, someone needs to take responsibility and be accountable. Our newest product innovation includes the Detection of Counterfeit Components by K-Shell XRF Technique.

Gary Goldberg, President and CEO

PROMATION

We are excited to announce our New Bonding Technology Machine. We have created a new work cell (the PRO 100 PPi ) that will work exclusively with RNT Foil technology to pick, place and instantly bond components using NanoFoil® technology. The PRO 100 PPi has been especially designed to work with Reactive Nano Technologies foil to pick and place both foils pieces and components (LEDs), then bond them through a pressure / electrical pulse process., an exciting new material used for soldering of metals.

John Perrotta, USA Sales Manager

Europlacer

We came to IPC Midwest with fairly low expectations due to current conditions. It looked like the overall attendance was down. But booth traffic, the level of interest in our new products and the quality of leads was right up with some of the best years. Our new iineo pick and place machine is doing very well with customer expectations exceeded.

Mike Konrad, President

Aqueous Technologies Corp.

The IPC Shows and Conferences are important shows for us. Aqueous Technologies is looking to support our industry for the long term even though we have shifted some of our budgets to other mediums such as the internet. We are excited to announce a new addition to our website, Aqueous Technologies University which provides a wealth of information about cleaning.

Steve Pollock, Vice President

Essemtec

Despite the current economic conditions that seemed to reduce the number of attendees, the IPC show turned out to be decent for our company. We have seen a tremendous growth in the popularity and interest in our products over the last several years. In addition to these trade shows, the Internet and search engine traffic has been of significant importance to our sales efforts.

Robert Horowitz, Regional Sales Manager

Mirtec USA

IPC Midwest was a tremendous success for us this year. Though traffic was lighter than in years past, we still saw a lot of activity from pre-show appointments and even closed a deal on the show floor.
