If its in reflow, do you see where the solder is going? If its in wavesoldering, hows the orientation of the parts? Wolfgang

We periodically see chip caps with poor solderability. Often terminations are missing plating.

Yeo, These are possible rootcause of that defect and you can evaluate. 1. Orientation of the capacitor, maybe the cap is located behind big component. 2. Reflow profile, check the profile on that side. 3. Yes, check also the mounting force. Philip

Dave, who told you not to wave solder? Is it your initiative, just to stay on the safe side, or did somebody provide evidence/recommendation? How could I contact this somebody? Is there any report/datasheet/white paper that you know of? Thx, SB

I have been wave soldering LCD's for about five years now and have done many thousands. As someone else mentioned they go dark when heated but then clear as the temp comes back down. The amount of failures attributable to the wave process has been l

Several online PCB fabrication quote forms offer SMOBC as a surface finish along with HASL, Ni/AU, etc. How does one specifify SMOBC for traces and untented vias, and elctroless Ni/Au for smt pads? Are these processes mutually exclusive? Or can I g

Actually they are complimentary. SMOBC describes how the solder mask shall be applied (but not the type, surface finish, color, etc). The other terms describe the type of surface protective finish applied to the solderable surfaces. You need to sp

Great information. Your all right in my book "Dave F". Thanks for your help. Will redesign D.O.E. with more refined profiles for the different materials and let you know how it goes. Take care N. Lykus
