simpel answer is yes it will need to be baked, the typical shelf life for a sealed component assuming it has been sealed would be a max of 2 years but some are shorter. The bugger problem with the device may well be solderability of the device!

I don't believe there should be any issues with the HASL finish. The issue is how long on the shelf and is a bake out required to remove moisture from PCB, as in any FR4 PCB's that may have had time to absorb moisture.

Just a random thought, but we had an issue with having to replace faulty LED's on a PCB, and the solution turned out to be pre-baking the LED's prior to build. Just put them in an oven at 40C for 24 hours, then build. Result was zero defective LED's.

What was the outcome OrHorti after baking some? In the end we went with a different machine (Fuji NXT) which was able to get the leds out of the reel. After switching we still face a loss of about 0.5% but it is acceptable for now.

When you talk about baking, I get the impression that you're talking about boards. Are you components dry also?

I'm guessing you're right that would be one way of doing it. Thanks for your feedback. Best, David
