Don't tell anyone, but this is how all the big boys really make their SMT boards: http://www.seattlerobotics.org/encoder/200006/oven_art.htm

You can find some input on IPC-HDBK-830 Guidelines for Design, Selection and Apllication of Conf Coating. Also look at IPC-CH-65A, Guidelines for Cleaning of Printed Board Assemblies. Regards...........GS

hi, sorry for the late reply. We solved the problem by rinsing the boards in deionized water after alcohol scrub

It's a functional test over a number of hours/days designed to give an accelerated life test, to detect possible faults, intermittants etc. You tend to run the boards in a hotter & harsher environment to reduce the test cycle time.

To date we have not had to perform any additional or special PCB handling or storage procedures for Pb free. We use standard procedures.

You did not tell us where your boards fit on the thermal mass range. That is key. I've run Pb Free low to medium thermal mass boards with good results on a 5 zone oven (5 top/5 bottom). You should not have a problem running a medium thermal mass boa

It all comes down to cost and reliability. Which order is up to you. You don't want to spend $100 fixing a $1 board.

Well, at that value point, I'd go with the hourly ( unburdoned ) high-skill rework/repair rate up to 50%-60% of the board value. If this is part of an integrated system ( in-house assembly ) repair to value ratio could go even higher.

Wow! How would it be possible to spend $700-$800 in labor to repair a single board? What are labor burdens these days? $30-$40 per hour at most?
