Weak joint strength and black residue

Electronics Forum | Fri Jun 08 17:22:51 EDT 2007 | naynayno

We have been producing an IMS assembly with SMT dpak's for some time. However, we recently encountered a new problem by chance - the parts can be flicked off with a finger nail. I state by chance because the solder joints are wetted and shiny with

Stencil Thickness

Electronics Forum | Fri Jun 15 18:48:49 EDT 2007 | prologic

We have not processed very much 0402 size components in the past. We are finding that alot of our customers are upgrading their circuits and going with 0402 size parts. We recently processed one such circuit and odered a paste stencil 6 mil in thickn

Reflow CFM Too High (FPM above 4000!! target=1433)

Electronics Forum | Fri Jun 22 03:11:53 EDT 2007 | vlazern

Our Heller oven is functioning well. However, we see defects from the oven, such as shifted coil inductor components, and missing chip components from time to time. When we re-scan the board at the AOI, the defect was not present at that stage, hence

Homeplate design

Electronics Forum | Wed Jul 25 11:16:34 EDT 2007 | lloyd

Hi Folks, I hope someone can help me, Is the homeplate stencil design (for reduced solder paste) the same for preventing solder balls as it is for reducing tombstones? i.e. the reduction of solder paste under the component termination. I'm trying to

Who's heard about

Electronics Forum | Fri Aug 03 09:58:20 EDT 2007 | stepheniii

And that's better because? I think the guy that thought this up has never been to a board shop or knows what is involved with plating. Why does he think it's the board shops that will disappear? Maybe they will simply build the board over the compon

Universal Instruments Lightning Heads

Electronics Forum | Wed Sep 26 17:26:02 EDT 2007 | jax

So far, So good! We are currently standardizing the Lightning Head Advantis as our chip-shooter. We only place chip packages, 0201-1206 with the Lightning Head and everything runs great. We performed qualification testing with components up to 20mm

RoHS Calculation

Electronics Forum | Fri Oct 12 10:16:37 EDT 2007 | stepheniii

How do you measure how pregnant a woman is? A component is ROHS compliant or it is not. If a component is not compliant and is put into an otherwise compliant assembly then that assembly is no longer compliant. I doubt anyone on here does any calcula

Solder wick on Ag/Pd termination

Electronics Forum | Mon Oct 22 05:04:08 EDT 2007 | jkhiew

Hi, Recently we have encountered solder wicking on components termination (total of 13 pcs of components on one pcb)with Ag/Pd finishes during lead-free reflow soldering. The pcb is LF HASL surface finish and LF solder paste composition is SAC305.We

Cracked Capacitors

Electronics Forum | Thu Nov 01 14:40:26 EDT 2007 | ck_the_flip

Electrically testing components is an age-old practice of the past. True "world class manufacturers" like to minimize, or even eliminate incoming inspection of ANYTHING - the theory being....a world class manufacturer should have such awesome relati

0402 Placement

Electronics Forum | Wed Jan 09 09:37:41 EST 2008 | flipit

I would suggest accepting components only in paper tape. I have had better luck with 0402s in punched paper over plastic embossed tape. You can also pick with oversized nozzles if your vision system does not give you trouble with seeing the nozzle.
