Cost of solder joint rework

Electronics Forum | Thu Jun 01 21:59:10 EDT 2000 | Ray Chartrand

Does anyone know the current cost to repair a defective solder joint? I seem to recall a number quoted a few years ago of $1.03 per joint with burden of overhead. I've also seen numbers from 50 cents to 50 dollars per joint.

I found a reference to Cost of Conversion earlier this year. Basically, the average cost to convert a single component from raw materials to assembled goods is $.08, just after pick and place. After placement and before reflow, repair (solder paste r

Paul, I have (as many have) come across this problem due to misregistration of resist at the PCB fab. You didn't say if these boards are inexpensive double sided or costly multis. I know this shouldn't make a difference on quality but I would tend t

Is solder purity affect solder joint reliability?

Do we really need to follow the IPC J-STD-001 Solder purity? If so, how to effectively balance the chemistry of Sn63/Pb37 other than adding a pure tin on the solder bath? Is this really needed to monitor in monthly basis? How many kgs of pure tin pe

We agree that it looks like a touch-up process. However, we're not certain that it would meet Class 3 requirements. It appears to be an incomplete solder joint. The outer bit of solder shows voiding to the inside bit of the solder joint, and it lo

If you allow 3 seconds for insertion of each connector and 2-3 seconds for each solder joint, then add a 10-12% contingency allowance you shouldn't be far out. Maybe get an averagely rated operator to build one on the clock. Regards, Chris

Ray, I don't know for sure what exact data Ceeris used to come up with their figures. Did they account for shipping? Was the rework done by expensive equipment? When I read your thre

You can get systems at various performance levels depending on your budget. The low cost systems are a great way to start off and then you can upgrade to a higher performance unit when you move to finer pitch components. Check out the VJ-1000LP at h
