Hello, I am looking for information on the Dye Penetration test for area array package failure analysis. Any recommendation on the dye to use? Any articles leading to this? Any comments on the effectiveness of this test? Regards, Arul

HI, I'm doing a dye penetrant and peel test of non-function BGA solder joints to locate the fracture surface. After applying dye, I found the dye ink just accumulate at the solder mask edge and spread everywhere after I peeled off the package. THis i

We form a barrier to contain the dye, but regardless it is messy. Actually, we no longer use dye, per say. We use the stuff machinists use for staining metal. Look here for hints: * http://www.ivf.se/Elektronik/dye_penetrant/edefault.htm * http:

Thanks David.I do not have any specific failure analysis to do now. But, like to use this technique in future. Appreciate your composure even during this time of unprecedented attacks. Regards, Arul

First, what on the area array package are you analyzing * Package cracking? * Cracked solder balls? * Er, what? Second, most failure analysis discussions consider dye penetration to be a non-destructive test, but then again most failure analysis

We are unfamiliar with yellow penetrant. Red is common, as you say. There are couple of green penetrants out there. Some red penetrants contain yeasts [eg, Calcofluor Yellow, Azosol Brilliant Yellow 6GF, etc] that fluorese yellow, but that's not what
