Corrosion due to RTV adhesive

Electronics Forum | Thu Feb 07 18:19:38 EST 2008 | mobytahoe

We are experiencing corrosion and subsequent pcb contamination from the RTV material used to secure a Power Supply. The degradation takes place over a few weeks. The power supply vendor is balking at liability, our OEM customer is screaming. Anyone

Corrosion due to RTV adhesive

Electronics Forum | Thu Feb 07 20:59:10 EST 2008 | davef

We bet your customer has freaked-out. Some common RTV out-gas ammonia during cure. Many types of RTV depend on strong acetic acid to work. Also, ammonia plus water in the air produces ammonium hydroxide, an aggressive alkali. We've talked about this

Replacing small SMD PMICs

Electronics Forum | Mon Feb 11 02:37:41 EST 2008 | bvdb

Hi Grant, I wouldn't worry too much. If your PCB has a solder mask, just glob the solder on and use solder wick to suck up the excess. A bit of Isopropal alcohol afterward with a cotton swab will make it look like it's been reflowed. Cheers, Ber

BGA Voids

Electronics Forum | Mon Feb 11 17:21:40 EST 2008 | larryd

What causes BGA voids over 25%? Have recommended profile for solder paste, hit 237C for 5 seconds and still get a void on 2% of specific BGA in various locations. BGA is FG676, 1mm pitch, on ImAg using lead free paste OM338 on a 6 layer FR4 PCB.

Hi, Have you checked out the BGA datasheet and see what profile is recommended for the BGA ? I use OM338 and there are dozens of recommended profiles for the Paste but you have to consider the components aswell. You state your Peak temp which I w

cleaning anodized panels

Electronics Forum | Wed Feb 13 05:56:55 EST 2008 | johnlee9210

Our front panels (where the controls show) for our assembled amplifiers are anodized and we make sure that it is free from oils or other stains prior packing the whole assembled unit. We just use damp cloth in cleaning and sometimes flux remover for

IP3 X1 Encoder Alarm

Electronics Forum | Thu Feb 14 00:05:50 EST 2008 | keithej2

Anyone ever seen an X1 encoder alarm on an IP3? We get it soon after power up and the x1 axis never locks. We have a motor/encoder on order but I've never seen this error message and am not positive that will fix it.

BGA dropping off the board

Electronics Forum | Fri Feb 15 06:21:34 EST 2008 | marjorie

Thanks for the comments and advice. The rest of the components have good solderability except for the BGA that fell off. Our production is high mix low volume so the quantity was very small. I'll check the pcb lands next time I run. It could be a con

BGA dropping off the board

Electronics Forum | Fri Feb 15 17:50:30 EST 2008 | stevek

Creating a sound tin nickel intermetalic takes a bit more energy than other finishes (such as copper or tin). You can achieve wetting, but not have a viable intermetalic. You should cross section some intact boards from that process and see what th

BGA dropping off the board

Electronics Forum | Mon Feb 18 02:08:06 EST 2008 | lococost

4 days seems a lot. You could be losing flux activation causing poor wetting on the enig. Check your suppliers data sheets for paste life. If it was contamination on the PCB, you'ld expect other components to solder badly as well. Try using a bra
