Honestly, I inspect the wetting and the solder volume. I leave mechanical testing to the CEO types that pry on components with screwdrivers and tell you it feels weaker than he thinks it should.

One of our customers does a drop test. They hold the final unit five feet above a concrete floor and drop it.

When I worked for a med. device company it was always great fun to observe the UL testing. Everyone would gather around the stairwell and say bon voyage to an $8k piece of gear. This was NOT a test of the mechanical strength of soldered connections

"...but it would also be testing if they had enough mechanical strength to hold the components on." Only if you take the time to observe the results. :) Your point is well taken, but these guys were only interested in seeing if any failure modes pro

One of our customers bangs the assembly on his table top to see if parts will fall off. Darwin is alive and well in the OEM world...

Does he look at the board under a Mantus and mistake vias for solder balls, get mad and walk away? Mine does.

We agree with Doug. Your board needs to be designed with the QFP at a 45* to the wave with scavanger pads in order to wave solder it. Otherwise if you wave solder it, you will need to hire an additional rework person.

Does anyone use the side cameras on the YesTech or Mirtec AOI systems? If so, how are you using them? Automated side inspection or as a tool to manually evaluate calls? Thanks James

Without understanding machine loading, we'd guess that your current "every 30 wave solder day" sampling schedule is fairly conservative. Consider approaches to better understand change in the analysis results.

Hi, the solder on the pad is not molt.Temperature of the leads is about 220*C( I change this T from 214 to 232) but result is same - solder is granular and not diffuse.I think the T on leads is not enough high,bu I can't increase because the max T on
