Does anyone have any experience with underfill of HD connectors? New customer wishes to underfill 6 HD connectors that have been pressed into PCB. Capillary action is causing the conformal coat to wick up into connector. Material is acrylic.

Check with your connector supplier, but most press-fit contacts will pierce through Types UR & XY conformal coat (military approved). Acrylic (AR) Urethane (UR) Epoxy (ER) Silicone (SR) Parylene (XY)

Well, another alternative is to use a water washable flux. If you insist on staying with a NC flux, use one that is probable. We prefer to probe solder, rather than copper.

Use Water soluble if you can, if not I would try the Indium SMQ NC paste, this residue stays soft. I would also change ICT probes to the "drill type". Russ

use water soluble solder paste is the cure for your problem. but if you insist of using NC change your pogo pins to pointed pins.

The general control on QFP fine-pitch coplanarity is +3mils. suggest to look at the re-use of thrown out component from SMT machine. If the component pack in std pack, then most probably the lifted is due to processing, not incoming as the packaging

It may be worth baking the boards for an hour at 120C and then trying it straight away do not leave them lying around. Is the fillet shallow and inverted back into the board. Do you have any blow holes as well? Cheers Greg BLT

Adam, If you use the chipwave on that board, eliminate the chipwave on one board and see if this eliminates the problem with the insufficient solder on the connector. Regards, Patrick
