Putting some sort of tape cover over the sharpie is not an option? Worth a shot on asking .... sounds like the solvent might eat the tape away as well but give it a try.

AIM, KESTER, OR INDIUM PASTE PREFERRED?

Kester water soluble seems to work best for us at this point. I am just trying to figure out why we are having so many problems when we use AIM paste. It tends to stick to the blades, clog the aperatures and of course gives us insufficient solder.

It is not common practice to perform this function.What is advisible is to cover the PCB surface with white copy paper.Screening onto the copy paper will give you a clear indication of your solder screening profile.This way your PCB's will stay clean
