After reading the variety of responses, I feel moved to ask if you're you talking about what are occasionally referred to as solder beads (mid-chip solder balls, attached to the waste line of your chip caps and resistors) or the solder balls that ten

Solder balls or mid chip beads? Remember IPC classification for Class 2 allows mid chip beads encapsulated in flux. Usually on R's and C's first thing I would do is verify .006 laser stencil 10% reduction and the most critical, The paste must be on t

mid chip solder balls we had that trouble for awhile we went from a 8 mil thick stencil to 6 mil stencil and did some home plate style of cut outs in the stencil for the 1206 caps and resistors it seemed to fix our mid chip solder balls

Can you describe your solder balls...mid-chip solder balls, "splatter" around pads, etc.?

To quote a regular here, "Are you sure your washer is set up correctly?" :P He's a WS junkie. This is a really common problem and is discussed here often. Mid chip solder balls (solder beads) are almost always the result of too much paste being dep

Here's what I do: - Test Surface Insulation Resistance (we're in the high reliability market and use a test significantly harder than IPC's). I also test SIR in combination with other assembly materials like conformal coatings and wave solder flux

We are having mid chip solder balls on chips and resistors. Seeing the problem on 80% of the assemblies we run. Anywhere from 1 to six of the balls per board. We have slowed the oven down, increased the pressure on the screenprinter to get less paste

Hi guys, Problem: Mid chip solder balling. Component affected: 0603 caps only Defect is PCB specific (Meaning only one PCB is affected as the aperture is standard for that component). As a containment I'll give a home plate design for the compo

Are the solder balls what we would call ' mid chip ' solder balls where a single or sometimes a few larger solder balls are positioned somewhere along the side of the chip or are they the solder paste powder particles spread around the pads ?

Interesting point Mark. We prefer solder mask between pads to reduce bridging. How does removing solder mask between pads eliminate solder balling? Thanks Dave F
