Solder Iron

Electronics Forum | Wed Aug 13 14:24:49 EDT 2003 | jdumont

Does anybody know where I can get a good high temp soldering iron. We recently began making a very thick board with lots of ground planes in it that dissipates the heat applied to the solder very well, making it difficult to rework. Thanks in advanc

We were having void problems with heat transfer down the via's (24 layer boards, shed loads of planes). So we drew the via away from the centre into a teardrop pad. Void's gone!

Chip Components with big ground pads - Unsolder

First of all, did you profile this board with a mole, such as a KIC? Is the solder flowing, or just not wetting to the part or pad? I work with RF boards as well, but the main problem is tombstoning due to the ground plane side being larger because o

Hey Vinny, Sorry I haven't looked at this for a while. 3 things to try: Tombstoning- The ground plane side is larger because the solder mask allows for a little slop at the board shop (clearance around a pad of a few mils). Since there is not a defi

Thanks for your input Cal! It is very helpful. The PCB's that I work on also have large ground planes. I was wondering if the Zephytronics could handle it. It is also good to know that they have a money back guarantee.

DEK 260 Stepper Motor Problem

Check the ground plane for noise with a scope. Steppers are very sensitive to spurs and will step in response to noise. Resistance welders on the same ground loo[ can be a problem as can seam sealers etc. Denis M Manncorp

Depends what the joint is on, and how historically it has performed - ie. is it a part that won't wick on the wave, or near a ground plane that never forms properly. It may be that they know something you don't about the board. However any info s

What is thermal mass?

Electronics Forum | Mon May 23 08:22:31 EDT 2005 | davef

Thermal mass is the ability of a material to absorb heat energy. * A lot of heat energy is required to change the temperature of high density areas, like a ground plane. They are therefore said to have high thermal mass. * Light weight areas, such as
