Tin Whisker Formation?

Electronics Forum | Fri May 26 11:44:36 EDT 2006 | H

Patrick: The image that you see was from a unit that was known to have gone through a 5-year environmental life test. However, we took another board, pre-refow, and scoped a similar device. It exhibited the same grainy component plating.

Depending on the material, the etching can damage the dielectric. This can be manufactured but is difficult and expensive. Copper plating and other processes that require agitation are almost impossible.

Imm Silver and Voiding

Good article. Would EDX analysis of the cross-section at the void joints be a good method to determine any plating contamination or solder mask issues?

Low tensile strenght of SMD

What do the leads of the components look like when you pull them off? Are they covered in solder? Did the plating stay on the solder fillets attached to the pads?

Dear Steve, I think the plating o fthe leads stay on the solder fillets. The leads of component are free of solder. Regards, Rosen

If its just the X axis then I would say that there is most likely something wrong with the ball screw. Does it only do it when the axis is moving fast ? Take the support plates out and check for anything out of the ordinary under there.

PCB type for BGA

Electronics Forum | Mon Aug 07 09:39:28 EDT 2006 | KHHO

Dear Sir, To design PCB with 0.8mm pitch BGAs, is ENIG PCB is better than Tlectro-plating PCB? Why? Than, what is the most effective way to determine the connection between BGA and PCB is good and strong enough?

OK, part touching paste before reflow? Check part. Maybe bad plating. Check reflow profile by slowing conveyor.
