Is it necessary, or beneficial to apply solder paste on the PCB pads for QFN rework? It seems that using micro stencils is not the best approach. Any guidelines or suggestions available for paste deposition techniques?

Solder paste on the pads will keep part aligned. If you do not use paste, you will need to apply tacky flux. You should not run without one or the other.

Found the issue. The footprint is incorrect. The inductor completely shields the paste from heat. Slid the inductor on the pad to expose the pad and paste, and perfect solder joint. This part was a last minute design change with a larger body.

You can also try different paste from what you are using(may be paste with lower melting point).

"The Pin-in-Paste process can be used to solder through hole components using surface mount assembly process steps." I find it at https://www.smta.org/knowledge/proceedings_abstract.cfm?PROC_ID=5 Hope is helpful

I do not agree with that. Stainless is typically used and it works fine. We run many different paste types, RMA, no clean, WS, PB, Pb Free. No sticking issues. You can spend the extra money and buy coated blades but it is not necessary for most ap

Hi Prem, We used to place millions of Nickel battery tabs using Cobar paste. We found it particularly aggressive. Just contact your local Cobar distributor and ask them for samples of their most aggressive fluxed paste. Kind regards, Rob.

We still use Via as test points. so we need to paste Via. Pasting will make better contact with probes compare to test via without solder.
